Aging-in-Place
A Guide to Aging-in-Place Remodeling
Life changes. The expected changes we can plan for, and the unexpected can happen suddenly. Aging-in-Place is a term to describe meeting a person's special needs for planning a long-term home. Aging-in-Place is about transforming your home into a safe, accessible and comfortable sanctuary while supporting the mobility challenges that can be faced as one navigates through an injury, sickness or the natural aging process. For the bathroom this can include, but is not limited to, low curb or zero entry showers with properly placed grab bars, a seat, and hand-held faucets; adequate turning spacing; various plumbing, shelving and/or cabinet changes; proper flooring and lighting; and widened doorways. In the kitchen, proper flooring, cabinetry with innovative shelving, and design changes can make a tremendous difference toward ease of use and safety.
